Your portfolio is much more than a collection of attractive photographs. It is your visual resume. Modeling agencies, casting directors, fashion brands, and clients use your images to understand your appearance, proportions, versatility, personality, and potential in front of the camera.
As a fashion photographer based in Istanbul, I work with models on professional portfolio shoots, model tests, fashion editorials, and commercial projects. I also regularly work with models represented by established agencies and have experience creating images for agency submissions, castings, and portfolio updates.
In this guide, I will explain what a professional model portfolio should include, how to prepare for a photoshoot in Istanbul, and what you should look for when choosing a model photographer.
What Is a Model Portfolio Photoshoot?
A model portfolio photoshoot is a professional photography session created specifically for a model’s career.
The purpose is not simply to create beautiful images. A good portfolio should show different aspects of the model and demonstrate how they work in front of the camera.
Depending on your goals, a portfolio photoshoot can include:
- Clean portraits
- Full-body photographs
- Fashion editorials
- Studio photography
- Outdoor photography
- Commercial-style images
- Different outfits and styling
- Different expressions and poses
- Natural light portraits
- More creative editorial images
The exact combination should depend on your modeling direction and the type of agencies, brands, or clients you want to work with.
Model Portfolio vs. Model Test Shoot
These terms are often confused, but they are not exactly the same.
A model portfolio is your overall collection of professional photographs.
A model test shoot is a specific photoshoot designed to test and develop a model’s potential. Test shoots are commonly used when a model needs new images for an agency, casting, portfolio update, or development.
A test shoot can be clean and minimal, or it can have a stronger fashion and editorial direction.
For new models, a professional test shoot can be one of the first steps toward creating a strong portfolio.
For experienced models, regular test shoots can help keep their portfolio current and introduce new looks, styles, and visual directions.
What Should Be Included in a Model Portfolio?
There is no single formula that works for every model.
A fashion model, commercial model, actor, influencer, and aspiring model may all need slightly different types of photographs.
However, a professional portfolio usually benefits from variety.
Clean Portrait
A simple portrait allows agencies and clients to clearly see your face and natural appearance.
The lighting should be flattering but not overly dramatic, and retouching should remain natural.
Full-Body Photograph
Full-body images are particularly important for fashion modeling.
They allow agencies and clients to understand proportions, posture, silhouette, and overall appearance.
Fashion Editorial
Editorial photographs show more than appearance.
They demonstrate your ability to work with styling, posing, lighting, movement, and a creative concept.
Natural Light Images
Outdoor and natural-light photographs can add another dimension to a portfolio and show how the model looks outside a controlled studio environment.
Different Looks
A portfolio should not contain twenty photographs where the model looks exactly the same.
Different outfits, hairstyles, expressions, locations, and lighting can demonstrate versatility while maintaining a consistent identity.
Studio or Outdoor Model Photoshoot in Istanbul?
Istanbul is particularly suitable for model photography because it offers both professional studio environments and a huge variety of outdoor locations.
Studio Photography
A studio gives the photographer complete control over lighting, background, shadows, and atmosphere.
Studio photography works particularly well for:
- Clean model tests
- Portraits
- Fashion editorials
- Agency portfolio images
- Controlled lighting concepts
- Minimal and modern photography
Outdoor Photography
Istanbul provides an enormous range of locations for fashion and model photography.
Depending on the concept, we can shoot around areas such as Nişantaşı, Karaköy, Galataport, Taksim, İstiklal, the Bosphorus, or other locations throughout the city.
Outdoor photography can create a more natural, dynamic, and editorial feeling.
For many models, combining studio and outdoor photography creates a more versatile portfolio.

Working With Models and Modeling Agencies in Istanbul
Istanbul has a large and active modeling industry, with models working across fashion, commercial campaigns, editorials, e-commerce, advertising, and international projects.
Over the years, I have worked with models represented by agencies and teams including Daman Management, Snoop Models, Casting Killer, and Star Models Istanbul, creating model tests, portfolio images, fashion editorials, and professional content.
This experience has taught me that a successful model photoshoot is not only about the camera and lighting.
The photographer also needs to understand how to direct a model, identify their strongest angles, create natural poses, and produce images that have a clear purpose.
Different agencies and clients may look for different qualities, so I approach each shoot according to the model’s experience, appearance, and career direction.
Male Model Photography in Istanbul
I also regularly work with male models and men’s fashion photography.
Male model portfolios often require a different approach to posing, styling, lighting, and image selection than traditional portrait photography.
Depending on the model and the intended market, a shoot can combine:
- Men’s fashion
- Editorial photography
- Clean agency-style portraits
- Commercial imagery
- Street fashion
- Studio portraits
- Lifestyle photography
The goal is to create a portfolio that shows the model’s versatility without losing a clear visual identity.
What Should a Model Wear for a Portfolio Shoot?
Clothing should support the model rather than distract from them.
For a typical test or portfolio shoot, I recommend bringing several different options.
For example:
- A fitted plain T-shirt
- Jeans
- Tailored trousers
- A clean shirt
- A blazer or jacket
- A suit
- Sportswear
- One stronger fashion or editorial look
Simple clothing is useful for clean portfolio images because it keeps attention on the model.
At the same time, one or two more distinctive fashion looks can demonstrate personality and versatility.
If necessary, I can also help with outfit selection before the shoot.
How to Prepare for a Model Photoshoot
Preparation can make a significant difference to the final photographs.
Get enough sleep
Good energy and a fresh appearance are important during a long photoshoot.
Take care of your skin
Avoid testing new skincare products immediately before the shoot.
Prepare your hair
If you are planning a haircut, it is usually better to do it several days before the photoshoot.
Bring several outfits
Even if you have already selected your main looks, additional options give us more flexibility during the session.
Bring references
If you have examples of photography, styling, poses, or lighting that you like, send them before the shoot.
References help us understand the visual direction you are looking for.
Arrive prepared
Studio and location time is limited, so arriving on time with your outfits and personal preparation already completed allows us to spend more time creating photographs.
How Long Does a Model Photoshoot Take?
The ideal duration depends on the number of looks, locations, lighting setups, and the type of portfolio you want to create.
A short model test can be completed relatively quickly, while a more extensive portfolio session may require several hours.
For example, a two-hour session can combine studio and outdoor photography, depending on the concept and logistics.
If we use several locations, additional time may be required for transportation and changing outfits.
The goal is not to produce hundreds of photographs.
The goal is to create a strong selection of images that you can actually use for your career.
How Much Does a Model Photoshoot Cost in Istanbul?
The cost of a professional model photoshoot in Istanbul depends on several factors, including the photographer, duration, studio rental, number of final images, retouching, styling, and production requirements.
My special price for a two-hour model test shoot is $200.
My regular photography packages are priced separately depending on the project and production requirements.
Studio rental, professional retouching, styling, makeup, and additional production can also be arranged when required.

How Many Photos Does a Model Need?
More photographs do not automatically mean a better portfolio.
A model is generally better served by having a carefully selected collection of strong images rather than dozens of photographs that look almost identical.
For a test shoot, I prefer to create variety within a consistent visual direction.
The final selection can include:
- Close-up portraits
- Half-body photographs
- Full-body images
- Different expressions
- Different poses
- Fashion looks
- Clean agency-style images
- Editorial photographs
The selection should represent the model accurately while also showing their potential.
Why Professional Photography Matters for a Model
Your portfolio is often the first impression you make before an agency, casting director, brand, or client meets you in person.
Professional photography can help communicate your potential more clearly.
However, professional photography does not mean excessive retouching or making a model look completely different.
For agency and casting purposes, photographs should still represent the person accurately.
My approach is to create polished fashion photographs while maintaining a natural and recognizable appearance.
Why Choose Istanbul for Your Model Portfolio?
Istanbul is one of the most visually diverse cities for fashion photography.
Within a relatively short distance, you can find:
- Modern architecture
- Historic streets
- Luxury locations
- European-style neighbourhoods
- The Bosphorus
- Contemporary art spaces
- Industrial locations
- Professional photography studios
This makes Istanbul a particularly flexible city for creating a portfolio with several different visual styles.
A single photoshoot can produce clean agency images, fashion editorials, street-style photographs, and commercial-looking content.
Model Portfolio Photography With Sergio Maiis
I am a fashion photographer based in Istanbul, specializing in fashion, editorial, portrait, model, and commercial photography.
I work with both new and experienced models and create images for model portfolios, test shoots, agency submissions, castings, fashion editorials, and personal branding.
My work has been published in international and fashion-focused publications, and I have worked with models connected with agencies including Daman Management, Snoop Models, Casting Killer, and Star Models Istanbul.
For each shoot, I focus on direction as much as photography. Many models, especially those at the beginning of their careers, do not need to know how to pose perfectly before arriving. My job is to guide you throughout the session and help you find your strongest expressions, angles, and movements.
Depending on the project, I can also help with:
- Choosing locations
- Selecting outfits
- Developing the visual concept
- Posing and model direction
- Studio selection
- Creating different looks
- Selecting the strongest final images
- Professional retouching
The goal is to create photographs that you can actually use for your modeling career.
